What is voice over internet protocol (VoIP)?
VoIP is voice, facsimile and/or voice-messaging applications that are transported via the internet, rather than the public-switched telephone network (PSTN). An analog voice signal is converted to digital format and compressed into internet protocol (IP) packets for transmission over the internet. The process is then reversed at the receiving end.
One advantage of VoIP is that the telephone calls over the internet do not incur a surcharge beyond what the user is paying for internet access.
